I have a problem with marking/identifying my water lilies and bog pond plants... Everything I've tried has not stood up to the conditions in the water and our brutal sun. While researching for a metal embossing label maker, I happened upon a review that someone did for the older 'Dymo-Mite Tapewriters'. I was able to choose from several listed on a reseller, $20-50, and chose one that was completely intact, the imprint wheel was metal not plastic, and though preowned, almost like new. It was in the M-11 family, and the closest manual was found under a search for an M-11 (I have an 1101-00, the manual for an 1101-05 is different). This tapewriter is all metal, only non metal parts are the feed wheel rollers. I learned through the manual that this one will punch holes but only does a straight shearoff. This tape is 1/2 (12mm) wide, and fits just fine and has been working well with the embosser. It did suggest in the manual that extra care was needed in handling the ss (stainless steel) tape as it could be very sharp.I needed a non rusting metal and will have nothing to adhere it to, so the non-adhesive aluminum was the choice. Only scary bit is when you open the roll and put it into the roll compartment, it will UNROLL to fill the space with some prejudice. The tape peels off easily though, then set it in the roll compartment with the roll compartment flat and parallel to the floor and get your fingers out of the way to let it fluff out. It will feed a little stiffly as you get it inserted into the roller area but after that it's smooth sailing. The tape takes a good imprint, if you are getting some chatter or scratches on the surface between letters or when half squeeze advancing, adjust your tension down a bit. It said in that manual if you go from plastic to aluminum or aluminum to SS you might have to adjust it up some, if you had SS in it last you may have to adjust it down and also adjust your pressure as you squeeze. The hole punch has had no issues with this tape either. It feels very thin, almost like part of a soda can, but it takes and holds the embossing well. Do not try to set the start more than one click before your start line or the corners of the leading edge can curl down and gum things UP and not feed.My embosser won't round corners but. If I need to knock the corners off, this tape will cut with a sharp pair of side cutters. I will suggest however to use 220 grit sandpaper, just glue a bit down at your work area and lightly swipe the corners across. The edge doesn't produce a paper cut like slash on a light slide, and a corner as cut, will leave a light mark with light contact across the skin. It could break skin but isn't majorly lethal. In a pond environment there are lots of nasty stuff and cutting self in the water is not a good thing, but. I would trust these edges with a light amount of care on my part not to do a slide drag or edge or corner impact with my body.Overall, working with this tape and running it through my embosser, it is working very well. It is the correct size, and it works.Update 17 May:The tape will cut with scissors. That is good. To save tape if you are punching holes on one end, this only sounds tricky....With tape end even with cutter, punch hole. Now roll back so tape end is even with the start mark. After embossing roll up and do one half-click after all the embossing JUST shows past the cutter, advancing it to one space past the cutter. Cut. Now punch hole for next one and proceed with backing up and lining up as mentioned. The hole is a little small so I'm using aluminum wire to attach the tags. So far so good, the embosser is working well if a bit clunky to use as it weighs like 2# and it is a slow process, but. With this tape it is now a permanent tag. I tried and it takes some DEDICATED work with a hard surface backing and a hammer to obliterate the embossing so, it should hold up to anything in my pond. The tape is working smoothly, having no issues with feeding through or backing it up, and it is taking the embossing clearly.Update 30 August:This is definitely the tape for identifying my pond and water plants, and my parent/donor/"mama" plants in my private greenhouse. I have run several rolls of it through my embosser and it is a good product, holding up well. It can dull slightly but it is still perfectly fine and readable. I found it very easy to punch the leading end of my tags as I describe above, and with a short length of wire can attach them to the tomato cage or trellis of my plant. They are also easily removed, and can be stored for use again. The corner sharpness is a minor issue and easily addressed by using the sandpaper to swipe them.Wire, I found TSC has an all aluminum electric fence wire with no coating; a quarter mile roll for affordable. I called the manufacturer and the wire is not coated, just aluminum; and it works well for attaching my tags to things or taking about 6", doubling it and twisting it with the tag in the loop and push the point into the dirt in the pot.

I hesitated buying this because of the price, but it does an excellent job and seems extremely durable.PROS:Mostly metal, except for the letter wheels. Seems like this could last more than a generation.Come with two wheels, one for reversing the lettering so you can read from the concave impression side.Comes with starter tape, steel and aluminum. The two punch options, hole or loops, are also useful.CONS:Really expensive. Seems like market collusion, because I found no real price competition. Also, I was disappointed by the adhesive on the aluminum tape. I'll need to ad a dab of glue if I want it to stay in electrical boxes under all weather conditions.BOTTOMLINE:Well made labeler. Expensive. Adhesive tape needs improving.

I bought this to create long-lasting labels for fruit trees. The quality of the product is obvious. It has a very solid feel, and the parts fit together perfectly. I would not recommend it for high volume use as your hand gets tired after making a dozen labels, but for occasional use, it's just the thing.Since I have had some questions about attaching the labels, I have uploaded two images. They show finished labels and how I attach a wire for looping around a tree branch.

Totally my fault as I did not know that this tape differs from other embossing tape. I.e., it is not in a cartridge and seems to need a specialized embossing machine. I have bought other aluminum tape with adhesive backing that works just fine. I’m sure this tape works great for intended purpose. Just wanted to leave this review to help prevent someone else making the same silly mistake that I did.

FIrst, the Tape-writer arrives in a nice heavy duty plastic carrying, protective case. I was worried about where I was going to store this, but since it has it's own case it fits easily on my tool shelf. Inside of the case is the Tape-writer, an instruction manual that appears to be clear and to the point. There is also two character wheels. One is for normal letters and numbers, the second is for reverse image. Finally there is a roll of Aluminum ribbon, and a roll of stainless steel ribbon. I was impressed with this package as I was only expecting the get the tape-writer and nothing else. The tape-writer itself is very solid feeling, made of 95% metal and a very grippy rubber handle on the cutting arm. This is my first metal tape-writer, having used the cheap plastic Dymo versions for years. I was hesitant at the price, but now having it in my hands I believe it was worth the money. Seems like it is built for the long haul.
